Blockshop Textiles

blockshop_lily_stockman_1
Blockshop Textiles embodies what it means to be ‘artisan made.’ Utilizing techniques used in Indian textiles over the past 350 years, the silk and cotton-blend scarves are as natural as they come. Each scarf is different, each design is unique and all of the scarves are are created and printed using only natural elements found in nature. Ingredients used in the process include dried onion skins, turmeric, pomegranate skins, mud, nuts and the sun. Each design is hand-carved into a wooden block and then hand-printed onto each scarf.

Blockshop Textiles is the creation of power trio Lily Stockman, Hopie Stockman and Vijendra Chhipa. Lily manages the designs while Hopie is at the helm of the business side and Vijendra brings a breadth of experience and knowledge as a fifth generation Master Printer. Blockshop also donates $2 from each scarf sold towards an initiative bringing a mobile eye care clinic to Bagru.

Home – A Moment In Your Life

It is history that paves the way for a new beginning. Each instant that passes induces progression and creates the next moment in your life. It was in 1970 that John Lennon gifted his friend and founder of HOME, Richard Ross, with the phrase “A moment in your life Richard,” reminiscing on their shared comprehension of living in the now.

The legend of HOME was conceived in 1969 when Richard Ross committed to embracing the atmosphere of home and the diversity of music at his bar/restaurant on 92nd and 2nd in New York City.

Unfortunately, Ross was soon diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease, though he was devoted to keeping his establishment open. HOME quickly became home to local, John Lennon who mutually feared loosing grasp of his life due to his voice on his beliefs. Hence, “A moment in your life” was cultivated. Lennon had the phrase printed on the back of HOME t-shirts as a gift to his friend, Richard Ross.

After becoming too ill, Ross sold HOME in 1978 and sadly, passed away on March 20th, 1984. Among others, Ritchie Havens, Alice Cooper, Ten Years After, Blood Sweat and Tears, and David Bowie all graced HOME with their presence before its close.

Home A Moment In Life Store

The legend of HOME was reborn when it was opened as a clothing store in San Diego by Ross’ three nephews. The stores’ interior encompasses the family’s passion for music and art. Their personal collection of vintage rock t’s are hung throughout the stores to be admired.

Hentsch Man S/S 2013

Childhood friends Alexia Hentsch and Max Von Hurter created Hentsch Man out of the search for the perfect white shirt. It was through the creation of this single staple item that the brand was born. Each item added to the line thereafter was built upon a mission to create classic pieces for the modern man.

Melding the ‘old’ meets ‘new’, they purposefully source European manufacturers that are dedicated to using traditional materials and techniques – literally making clothing for our generation in much the same way as how they were made for our grandparents. It is this attention to detail and fit that set the foundation for the brand. Their clothing achieves a daunting task of being tailored yet effortless, chic yet comfortable. London-based Hentsch Mann’s casual fit melds beautifully in creating a fashion forward and timeless look.

Le Beau – LA Launch @ Lash

Witness This cruised amongst the black and white of Le Beau’s LA launch party this last week. Seriously everyone at this party was wearing either black or white. It was hard not to be inspired by Le Beau’s latest line, shown to us by Nicholas Routzen who did his best to educate over jams by Erik Hart, Ross O’Carroll, Becka Diamond & DJ Whitney. The tee/tank cuts are duel gendered and as deep-necked as always. Materials soft and loose fitting, graphics clean and dialed. Beautiful people is the name of the game at these parties and we took part in a lot of trailing off conversations due to the amazing people watching. Lash is in the heart of the city and as we closed down the party and headed on our way, new tees in hand, we found ourselves walking quickly to dodge some shady street characters that surely just wanted a Le Beau’s Los Angeles Tee of their own.

David Keith – Vinyl Art-Wear

I saw David’s glasses in a small art exhibit at Home in Encinitas. At first glance, I noticed the incredible use of classic and modern designs twisted together to create a unique artistic interpretation.   There was also something very unique about the materials the frames were made from, but I couldn’t figure out what it was until I noticed a perfect cut out of them in an old vinyl record beneath. The raw look and intricate details of the frames immediately drew me in and made me want a pair.

With 10 years experience as a licensed optician David started up Spexwax, something he describes as ”a new reality functional art you can wear; AKA Art-Wear.”   All his glasses are made from damaged vinyl records, and high quality lenses (They also come in prescriptions).  Everything down to the case (made from the actual record cover) is a one-of-a-kind creation that makes these glasses a privilege and a pleasure to wear.  If you are interested in getting set up with a pair, you can contact David by email or visit his website at spexwax.com.

The Real Collective

The Real Collective is based out of Venice Beach California, and was started by Xavier Sotomayor and Paul Elliot.

They say: “The Real Collective brand is about reviving authenticity. We celebrate freedom, self expression, and those bold Americans of the past who were daring enough to take the road less traveled. We are currently developing new product lines with some tank styles coming out in the next week or so for the spring!”

We say: Simple and to the point, great blanks and perfect patterns. The textiles they use here are fresh and add that perfect bit of detail to stand out, but not too much. Easy to wear and a great price point for custom tees like this.
