Andres Serrano’s controversial art piece titled Immersion and more commonly known as Piss Christ was destroyed by Christian protesters on Palm Sunday while on display in Avignon, France. The artwork created in 1987 is a photograph of a Christ figurine immersed in a glass of the artists’ own urine and has been a lightning rod of controversy. Serrano claims the artwork to be a retaliation against the “billion-dollar Christ-for-profit industry” and a “condemnation of those who abuse the teachings of Christ for their own ignoble ends.”
