Released back on 4/20, Curren$y and veteran producer Alchemist’s Covert Coup collaboration could have easily had a one-day expiration date. Fortunately, the New Orleans weed connoisseur continued the hot streak he started on 2010’s Pilot Talk, bringing fellow underground warrior and adept lyricist Freddie Gibbs along for the ride on “Scottie Pippen.” Alchemist’s production on the track is perfect for both MCs. Its distant, languid guitar tones allow Curren$y’s drawl to shine, while Gibbs sticks to the beat with an urgent, rapid flow. Both rappers have become online favorites for making the hip-hop they want to make. Neither may be the Michael Jordan of rap, but sometimes two Scottie Pippens can feel more exciting.
